In his childhood the family moved to Salgótarján, Hungary to the gypsy settlement of Pécskődomb, where they lived in a small house they had made themselves. Balázs grew up in severe poverty, and then began to paint and write poetry. After returning from prisoner of war, he lived in seclusion: he continued his work as a kind of hermit. His friends and admirers brought him canvas and paint so that he could create.
