All that is gold – Gallery (TEMPORARY CLOSED!)
Dear Visitors!
"All that is gold" - currently closed for renovation.
The vast majority of archaeological objects in the gold collection of the Móra Ferenc Museum are excavation finds. Among the objects in the collection until the middle of the 20th century, there are several that were found by chance, during non-authentic excavations. There are many real and legendary stories about rare and valuable archaeological relics and gold treasures that changed hands before the experts could have learned of their existence.
Archaeological gold is one of the main units of the exhibition entitled "All that is Gold". All pieces are unique, artistically designed, testifying to the high craftsmanship and aesthetic taste of the craftsmen of the given era.
One of the most important treasures of the museum is the Hungarian Nagyszéksós gold find, which was found in the vineyards of farmer Mátyás Bálint in the Nagyszéksós steppe in 1926 and was discovered by Ferenc Móra, the director of the Szeged museum at the time. According to the legend, similar pieces of gold were found in the area before, which - not knowing that it was gold - the children exchanged among themselves for pumpkins and apples. As it turned out later: the gold pieces were pieces of the largest Hun gold treasure to date, of which approximately 150 items, weighing more than one kilogram of gold in total, are still kept by the Móra Ferenc Museum.
In addition to the archaeological gold finds, the gold coins of Róbert Károly, Louis the Great and King Matthias, commemorative medals and commemorative coins are also presented at the exhibition. Two special objects can be seen at the exhibition: the gold pen of István Tömörkeny and the unique gold tie pin, into which you can see the portrait of Lajos Kossuth.
The creation of the gallery was supported by the Ministry of Human Resources.
