János Kass (1927‒2010)
– He was born in Szeged in 1927. His family was on friendly terms with many prominent personalities of the town, so the youngest Kass spent his childhood being around Ferenc Móra, Zsigmond Móricz and Gyula Juhász, among others.
– The turbulent historical events of the 20th century followed the artist throughout his youth.
– Between 1946 and 1949, he studied at the College of Applied Arts, where he graduated in ceramics. Among his teachers was sculptor Miklós Borsos (1906‒1990).
– From 1949, he was a student in the Department of Graphic Arts at the College of Fine Arts. He graduated in 1951.
– Between 1960 and 1961, he studied at the Department of Book Art at the College of Graphic Arts and Book Art in Leipzig. Returning from there, he was a teacher at the Typography and Graphics Department of the Hungarian College of Applied Arts from 1967. Making the art design for books accompanies his entire body of work: his illustrations for children’s books, novels, and poetry have influenced the visual culture of generations. In total, nearly 350 publications are decorated with János Kass’s drawings and graphics.
– From 1965 to 1973, he was the art editor of the magazine Új Írás (New Script).
– From 1973, he also designed postage stamps and postcards. By the turn of the century, more than fifty stamps and postcards based on Kass’s designs were issued.
– His works were featured in individual and group exhibitions in numerous places all around the world, such as London, Sydney, and Switzerland, among others.
– His artworks have been recognized with numerous awards.
– The artist approached every topic with clear sensitivity and subtly humorous intelligence, be it the Holy Scriptures, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, contemporary poetry, or The Adventures of Misi Mókus (a popular Hungarian storybook). János Kass’s visual world has a thousand faces, yet is distinctive: it is a mirror of the current era, and, at the same time, an epoch-maker; his works are eternal, and his œuvre has unequalled value.
