The Tragedy of Man, small-size series
In 1975, the Fine Arts Fund Publishing Company published a mini-book edition of The Tragedy of Man, with illustrations by János Kass. The size of the books is 60×40 mm, so the artist had to strive for an even clearer, more concise representation compared to the previous The Tragedy series in order to adapt to the small size. The small-scale etchings give the essence of the scenes of The Tragedy of Man, which also echo Kass’s 1957 series of ink drawings on this subject. The artist achieves a brilliant solution whereby the limited size of the copper plates does not stand in the way of either the rich imagery or the monumental effect.
